When should you change your engine oil? A quick guide

Engine oil cools, cleans and lubricates the moving parts. Stretching the change interval is one of the most common causes of the expensive engine repairs we see at our centre.

The general rule

  • Fully synthetic oil: roughly every 7,500–10,000 km, or as your owner's manual says.
  • Semi-synthetic or conventional oil: roughly every 5,000 km.
  • Either way, don't go past 6 months even if you've driven very little.

"Severe" driving conditions

High heat, daily traffic, short trips and dusty roads count as severe conditions in most manufacturer handbooks. That describes most cars in Jeddah, so we recommend sticking to the shorter interval.

Signs your oil needs changing

  • The oil light or a service reminder on the dashboard.
  • Dark, thick oil on the dipstick.
  • A louder-than-usual engine at start-up.

Don't forget the filter

We replace the oil filter at every oil change and check the air and cabin filters in the same visit. It usually takes under an hour.
